Heart of the Hills

Morehead, located in the foothills of Eastern Kentucky's Appalachian Mountains, was founded in 1854 by Colonel John Hargis and named after former Governor James T. Morehead. With a population of nearly 7,000, the city offers a welcoming small-town atmosphere and a rich history.

Home to Morehead State University—one of the Top 25 Universities in the South—Morehead also boasts Cave Run Lake, the region's largest recreational attraction, and Rowan County Senior High School, ranked among Kentucky's Top 100 high schools. The city is served by St. Claire Healthcare, one of the area's largest employers, with 1,200 staff members, over 100 medical providers, and 32 medical specialties.
